Source of Water

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon your seed, and my blessing upon your offspring. Isaiah 44:3

Growing up as a farm girl, I always remember my dad being overly consumed with the weather. I would hear his excitement when it rained, especially when the ground was dry. One summer there was a major drought in our area. It was incredibly depressing for everyone. I remember praying for rain. Relying on rain for one’s livelihood can be unnerving – yet dependency can lead to the true Source of water.

Throughout the Bible, God provided water to those who desperately needed it. Hagar needed water for her son in the wilderness. The Israelites also thirsted for water in the wilderness. The infamous Samaritan woman at the well got more than water when she met Jesus. Each person realized the source of their water came from God.

God told the Israelites that, “He will give rain for your land in its season – early and late rains – so you can gather in your grain, wine and oil.” (Duet. 11:14) God’s provision in the rain provided fruitfulness and growth for both the people and their animals. Later, God warned them not to be deceived and worship other gods. He promised that He could also shut up the rains.

My own drought can largely be caused by the deception in my heart and the worship of other things. In Ezekiel, there is a prophecy against the nation of Eygpt. “Eygpt was the great dragon that lies in the midst of his streams, that says, ‘My Nile is my own I made it myself.’”(Ez. 29:3) Although Egypt was once a great nation, it was brought down by God because of their pride. No nation can believe that they are their own source of water.

I will perish if I begin to think I am my own source of water. Humility and dependency leads me to the true Source of water.  God’s rain is always there for me if I open my heart and eyes to see it. His provision can be early or late – but never too late. Perfect in its portion and persistence – let it rain over my soul.

I find great comfort in the promises found in Isaiah verse, as it reveals that God will not only bring water to me but also to my offspring. As a parent, my only real desire is for my kids to also know and depend upon the Source of water.

Source of Water
Perfect. Persistent. Provisional. Promised.

How am I seeking God’s ‘rain’ over my life in this season?
