Rewards in Cultivation

You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate… that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart. Psalm 104:14-15

Every summer growing up, one of my jobs was to help my dad in the field. School was barely out and my cousins, siblings and I would be in the fields to get all the rocks and weeds out. I did not totally get the purpose for all this labor then. All I cared about was my reward – money in my pocket. The reward for my dad was a clean field to ensure future success in his labor and harvest.

My Father God has clear picture of the cultivation process for all of us which includes a balanced reward system – wine, oil and bread. God’s work in me cultivates these rewards. His very presence in these rewards empowers me to keep cultivating. Fruit bears more fruit. He planted these rewards or “rich foods” on the earth for our nourishment and enrichment.

Wine
The wine is a clear symbol of God’s redemption in our lives. It is the lifeblood that flows from Him to me. The freedom I receive from His sacrifice produces the ultimate joy in my life.  His wine gladdens my heart. Now, when I drink a glass of wine it represents more than the sweet harvest of grapes – I taste my redeemed life!

Oil
The oil is a symbol of God’s anointing for our lives. Throughout the Bible and history, prophets, priests and kings, were all anointed with oil to mark the calling on their lives. After Jesus came and died, Christians were called into His royal priesthood and anointed by His Spirit to make their life shine for Him. The oil seals in my calling and my anointing  – allowing me to feel equipped in the work He has for me.

Bread
The bread symbolizes His presence in my life to sustain my soul. His presence provides stability and strength. As I labor in my ‘home field’, I can have His bread with me – sustaining and providing the necessary balance to my life. Who doesn’t love a good loaf of bread?!

Sometimes I can get lost in my work and seek to be motivated by the wrong rewards. When I seek God’s  rewards, I can experience more of Him and continue persevering in my cultivation.  These rewards provide freedom, equipping, sustenance and true satisfaction – generating a deeper connection with Him.
