More Salt

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Colossians 4:6

Just as salt is a powerful seasoning in food and life, words are powerful sources to give life. Last summer, I taught the verse above to my kids. Almost daily I need to remind them to apply more salt to their tongues, especially when they are communicating in anger. Salt is a transforming agent. It brings quality to my table and home.

As I continue to watch the Netflix Docu-series on SALT, FAT, ACID and HEAT, I am inspired by the beauty of these simple elements that can enhance and enrich foods as well as my life. The key of salt, according to Samin Nosrat, is that it brings food to life. All salt comes from the sea. In the spiritual realm, salt comes from the spring of living water that flows within me. The key is to freely drink from the life-giving water that Jesus provides. (John 4)

Apply
When to apply salt? In the Bible, salt was used during offerings to solidify the covenant between the Israelites and the Lord. As salt was regarded as a necessary ingredient for daily food, and so for all sacrifices offered to the Lord (Leviticus 2:13), it became an easy step to the very close connection between salt and covenant-making. A Middle Eastern saying, “There is bread and salt between us,” meant that a relationship had been confirmed by sharing a meal. Salt symbolized the life and enduring nature of the alliance. King David received his kingdom forever from they Lord by a “covenant of salt” (2 Chronicles 13:5). Salt can be a strong solidifying agent of transformation in all relationships. Apply it regularly.

Enhance
Salt enhances. Salt is a gift from the sea. Salt is more than a purifying and preservative agent, it improves the natural elements of food. It realizes the source. Everyday as I put more of my trust in the the life-giving water of Jesus, His saltiness intensifies my natural talents and abilities. His truth brings flavor to my soul.

Marinate
I like to marinate my meat. The longer the marination time, the better the taste. Marination layers the saltiness. The more I allow God’s truth to marinate in my soul, the greater my faith and His saltiness can penetrate. The result is a tasteful life that can and should be poured out to others. “Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace one with another.” (Mark 9:50) Salt is the essence of fruitfulness in my life. A gift of friendship I can pour out to others in this tasteless world.

More SALT
Apply. Enhance. Marinate

What flavor am I adding to my life and others?
