Matters Most

The one thing I ask of the LORD – the thing I seek most – is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. Psalm 27:4

Like a good recipe, what matters most in life are the right ingredients. Although I was raised on a farm, this city girl has struggled to grow anything….until this summer. With lots of water, sun and soil…I finally got a harvest of bright red tomatoes. The bounty of the harvest is still coming and my kids are thrilled to eat tomato soup and fresh salsa from our very own tomatoes. The right mix of ingredients has finally reaped a harvest.

Life is hectic and its busyness can drive me to the brink of exhaustion – physically, emotionally and spiritually. Only by going to God’s truth and my knees, I discover what matters most. Everyday I follow a few simple ingredients for a healthy start to my day and continue going back to these truths before I lay (or crash) my head on my pillow.

Focus
My day starts and ends in prayer. Sometimes I can only utter these simplest yet heartfelt of words, “Help me!” My desire always is to praise and seek His help to prioritize my priorities for the day.  Focusing on who I am in God’s eyes and how much God loves me fuels my day.

Feed
Food is kind of a major priority in my life but more importantly I want to be spiritually well-fed. Daily, I need a doses of physical, emotional and spiritual food for my body, mind and soul. It can be as simple as making sure I don’t miss a meal.  And also prioritizing my time in God’s word. Food energizes my body just as God’s word energizes my soul.

Trust
Trust is a hard concept to realize. I try to visualize myself walking in the shadow of God and knowing that if I follow Him close enough I will find my security and shelter in the shadow of His wings. (Psalm 91) Trust is walking by faith – allowing the eyes of my heart to see what my mind and eyes cannot visualize. There are days and even seasons where I am spiritually blinded. I know some people have challenges with the unseen God. God wants to make His presence and power known to us. As a created being, I am meant to know my Creator. He is just as real as gravity.

Treasure
Everyone’s ultimate desire is to find peace and joy. My countenance reflects this when my soul and heart are satisfied. The greatest treasure in my journey is found in being loved and loving others. The only way to find that treasure is in the one who created me and loves me through all my weaknesses and failures. God is the treasure I seek.

Sometimes in a world that seems to be spinning out of control around me, the only way back is to find the real recipe and ingredients. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

Matters Most
Focus. Feed. Trust. Treasure.

What things matter most to me? Do I treasure and trust these to an Almighty God?

  1. Trust, yes, I get that as hard as it is to do it. But never thought of “Treasure,” I’m gonna need some time to process that.

Loved “the only way back is to find the real recipe and ingredients. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.”
