Immeasurable


And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more that all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Ephesians 3:18-21


As Thanksgiving approaches, old family recipes come out with Grandma’s handwritten notes of her special measurements. It will be another Thanksgiving missing her unique touches and fabulous pies. In my opinion, there is no one who can rival her baking abilities.  In cooking and baking, measurement is a key. At times though, I try to eyeball things or remember measurements off-the-cuff. Not always a good idea. It is difficult in life to always get proper portions or make decisions based on my own economy of scale. With God’s immeasurable love, I can make better life choices and measurements.

Measurement is crucial to ensure the proper portions. It is useful in itemizing the details. Most countries measure in metric. The US likes to measure in cups, ounces, pounds, and gallons. This can be a bit frustrating when you are trying to convert a recipe. Thankful to always have Google on hand to help with those conversions. Thankful more to have the Holy Spirit to help me measure my days. God’s love is immeasurable, yet always more than enough for me and for others. Although immeasurable, it is very visible and something to be grasped. In my everyday circumstances, I see how God provides and takes care of my friends, family and little old me.

Measurement creates an element of economy. It is used to associate value. If I go to the store a measurement is taken and a value given for those precious ingredients for my Thanksgiving feast.  In God’s economy, there is no measurement system, but each person is uniquely made and valued. The least to the greatest will be in His kingdom. In fact, he said it is easier for a poor man to enter the kingdom than a rich man. God’s love and his purpose for us is immeasurable. God is able to do immeasurably more in my life than I could ever imagine. (Ephesians 3:20)

Measurement allows for comparisons. It provides an evidence for weight, height, length and depth. Every time I take my kids to the pediatrician for a annual check up, their body measurements and comparisons are posted on a chart. My kids are well under the 50th percentile mark, but the doctor always informs me that they are exactly in line with their own growth chart. With God there is no chart of comparison, just a steady focus on my growth.  He “stretches me” so I can see how wide, long, high and deep is His love for me. Today, I count my many blessings and give thanks as a simple way to grasp His immeasurable love.
