Bread Alone

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day.” Exodus 16:4

No one would consider feasting on bread alone, however, it is a major staple all around the world. Every culture has it’s own unique take on their favorite bread. Some take their toast in the morning, others biscuits in the afternoon or to compliment an evening meal. The taste and use of bread is universal.

Manna was the bread chosen for God’s people. It was a gift to both humble and test them in their obedience to the Lord. Manna was an unknown flaky substance that would coat the earth six days a week. On the sixth day, a double portion was intentionally given for the Sabbath – a day to rest.

Manna prepared them to understand God’s presence was essential in their lives. Daily, it would be given and only daily could it be received. Only the portion needed for that day. Each person to gather his own portion. Nothing more and nothing less.

This signified that God is sufficient and will always be enough. The very Highest coming down to earth…covering it with His love. His Presence. The Bread of Life does not spoil or rot. Eternal. Complete and lasting.

God’s people did not understand this manna nor its significance at that time. This temporal bread was a foreshadow of the Bread of Life that would nourish the body and soul. This bread that my soul longs to taste… Jesus – the Word coming down from heaven and living among us. The Bread from Heaven giving us eternal Sabbaths. Food for our souls.

Grace. Grain. Glory.
Freely given. Receive. Give thanks. Eat. Repeat daily. Live on Bread alone.

Is there a hunger inside me?

Do I see His presence in my life?

  1. Great thought, I’ve often connected this thought of being given what we need for the day with Lam. 3, but not necessarily the manna. Thanks for sharing!
