Anticipate Advent

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called:Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Last night the little guys helped roll the cookies in sugar crystals making mounds of yummy Christmas Snickerdoodles. The Christmas music playing in the background, the house in complete chaos yet my heart is full in this frenzied season. It is a special time of year to bring the love and joy of Jesus to life through traditions. Baking has been a solid tradition for my family over the decades. I loved baking cookies with my Grandma, mom and siblings. Even though the miles separate us, I will call them to see what they are baking or get a recipe I might have misplaced. This is the season to share, spread and anticipate joy.

Last night in our family Advent time, the candle was lit to celebrate the joy that Jesus brings us. We read how Mary and Elizabeth embraced and the baby in her womb rejoiced within her. The special bond was formed as the baby in Elizabeth’s womb, who is now known to us as John the Baptist, anticipated the coming of Jesus. He was God’s messenger that foretold of the coming of Jesus’ as the Messiah and king. John, in his season, diligently spread the good news, with great fear and vigor. He anticipated Jesus.

This is the season of sights, sounds, smells and surprises. It is a special time of year to embrace the joy of Jesus and anticipate His return. I have observed advent for almost 20 years.  It is now special for me to share this tradition of lighting a candle with my little ones. They love the unique Advent Book we read together as a family, turning it’s pages and opening the doors. It is a delight to hear their little voices singing songs of praise about the baby in a manager and the joy He brings to the world. Last night, they all patiently and excitedly waited as prayers finished, so they could blow out the candle. All four huddled around the candle with great anticipation and excitement! In the beauty of their anticipation, it dawned on me. That is the excitement and anticipation that God is desiring for me to have. To be looking toward the light of the world – Jesus – with that same enthusiasm and patience. His time will come. His light will shine the brightest. Jesus’ return will be the greatest event yet to come. I am excited!

Anticipate Advent
Lights. Traditions. Good news.

What do I anticipate most in this season? What joy can I spread?
